SONOMA, Calif. (July 28) - With one little exception, driver Larry Morgan has been pretty pleased with the performance of the Lucas Oil Ford Mustang at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals.
"We've run pretty good for the most part," Morgan said on Saturday. "But there was the one run where we tried to wheel stand the car. Otherwise, we're where we want to be."
Morgan qualified No. 10 in the Pro Stock field for Sunday's eliminations with a best lap of 6.568 seconds at 210.08 mph.
"We're a couple of hundredths (of a second) off the good guys," Morgan said. "And we're about .04 seconds off the real fast guy (No. 1 qualifier Allen Johnson). I think we're in position to pick up a little at a time and do good every round."
Morgan pairs up with fellow veteran V Gaines in the first round of eliminations. Gaines qualified No. 7 with a best pass of 6.554 seconds at 210.77 mph.
It's been a significant handful of races since the Pro Stock cars have seen the kind of cool weather they've enjoyed in Northern California this weekend, and Morgan said the prime conditions level the playing field in a way.
"This kind of weather really tightens the spread up," Morgan said. "More cars are running similar ETs. It's so much easier for everyone to tune their cars when the air is better.
"We just need to tune the car up a little more tomorrow. We'll have a good race against V tomorrow, our cars are pretty close."
Morgan has been a bit of a starting line ace this season and has four first-round hole shot wins over higher qualified cars to show for his efforts.
"I'll need to ace it tomorrow that's for sure," Morgan said. "With the cars as close as they are, I'm going to need every advantage I can get."
Eliminations for the NHRA Sonoma Nationals get under way at 11 a.m. PDT on Sunday.
