Callaway looking to make a move in Memphis
MILLINGTON, Tenn. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Lee Callaway will be looking to make a move on the Division 4 field during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Memphis Motorsports Park. Callaway, who is currently in a tie for second in points hopes to gain ground on points leader Ashley Force this weekend, and also maintain his lead in the Jegs Sportsman All-Star points.
Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, cited getting behind the proverbial eightball at the season opener in Houston. He hopes to erase that trend this weekend.
"We went out there and had problems in qualifying and barely made the field," said Callaway. "We had some bad ignition parts that really hurt our horsepower, so we were behind the game when raceday came around. Hopefully this weekend we can get off to a strong start during qualifying and go from there."
Rather than beating the field with big numbers, Callaway hopes to get in a groove and use consistency to his advantage.
"I know we can't run the .20's and low .30's the Reichert's and Force's can," stated Callaway. "I do know if we get this car running right, it should be able to run low .40's and maybe even .30's consistently, though. We're just going to do our best and make the field beat us."
"We feel like it's pretty important to do good here," Callaway continued. "This time of year is really the A/Fuel cars time of year, so if you can do good now, it will really benefit you when the weather warms up and the blown cars have a better shot. It's sort of like stealing a home game from them."
Qualifying starts on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
