Callaway to start title defense at home track.
BAYTOWN, Texas - Despite being able to wear the prestigious "41" number on his wing denoting his NHRA Division 4 Championship last year, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Lee Callaway realizes a new season starts at this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Houston Raceway Park. Callaway not only wants to get off to a strong start, but would love to win in front of his hometown fans.
Callaway, who lives just miles from the track in Baytown, Texas, cites that entering the race as the defending champion will be a new experience.
"It's going to be a different feeling this weekend," said Callaway. "Usually we go into this race gunning for whoever won the championship last year. This year everyone will be gunning for us. That just comes with the territory I guess. We won't let it get to us, we'll just go out there and do the best we can do. We got a great team in my tuner Tom Conway, crew chief Stacy McLemore, my Mom and Dad, chassis builder Chuck Haase', my brother Johnny, and Kenny Ruthart. I've never been able to do real well here, so we're going to do our best to be taking pictures Sunday night."
Callaway is also pleased to announce the signing of associate sponsors InsideTopAlcohol.com and Valvoline for the 2003 season.
"We were able to reach deals with InsideTopAlcohol.com and Valvoline for this season," cited Callaway. "We are still in search of a primary sponsor, but our associate partners are a very important part of making what we do a reality. They will join our long time associate partner Trans Matic, and we hope to have a long relationship with both companies."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions following on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
