NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES -- NORTHEAST DIVISION LEBANON VALLEY DRAGWAY, WEST LEBANON, N.Y.

RACING UNDERWAY AT LEBANON VALLEY DRAGWAY

WEST LEBANON, N.Y. -- In the first rounds of qualifying at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series being held this weekend at Lebanon Valley Dragway, Top Alcohol Dragster driver John Finke and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Frank Manzo took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their respective classes.

John Finke of Selkirk, N.Y., got off to a fast start outrunning the field with a pass of 5.449 seconds at 265.01 mph. In the number two position, Darvin Martinets of Lake Jackson, Texas, ran a time of 5.582 seconds at 223.28 mph.

10-time Lucas Oil National Champion Frank Manzo of Morganville, N.J., took the number one spot with a pass of 5.635 seconds at 256.75 mph in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Manzo outran Bob Tasca III of Cranston, R.I., who qualified second with a time of 5.764 seconds at 253.80 mph.

Qualifying first in Comp Eliminator was Frank Aragona from Old Bridge, N.J., making a pass of 8.429 seconds, while Gerry Russo of Saddle River, N.J., qualified second driving a '04 Cavalier. Super Stock driver Joseph Franco III, of N. Babylon, N.Y., took the early lead driving a '85 Camaro and making a pass of 10.288 seconds

Stock Eliminator driver Tom Kreeber of Rensselaer, N.Y., outran Fred Thibeault of Annapolis Colo., to end day one of qualifying in the first position with a pass of 11.397 seconds. Also finding the top position was Top Sportsman pilot John Benoit of Montpelier, Vt., who took his '57 Bel Air for a run of 6.882 seconds at 202.30 mph. Benoit edged out Carmel, N.Y., resident Chris Rini, who qualified with a time of 6.928 seconds at 201.70 mph. In Top Dragster it was Ed Alessi Jr., of Bethpage, N.Y., that ran 7.145 seconds at 186.98 mph to take the first position over Glen Crane of Wethersfield, Conn.
