LAS VEGAS, Nev., April 11 - U.S. Army Top Fuel pilot, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, took the provisional pole position here Friday following the first day of qualifying for the SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Schumacher, who is the Top Fuel point leader, laid down a 4.510-second pass at 328.38 mph in the second session to climb to the top spot. The Chicago-area resident is in hot pursuit of his first pole of the year and the 48th of his career.

"That pass was especially pleasing to me since I was carrying in my driver's suit a Medal of Honor from a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran," said the defending world champion. "Staff Sergeant Jon Cavaini is one of only 150 still living with a Medal of Honor. I was thrilled to be able to do that for him."

After a second round loss in Houston two weeks ago, Schumacher is hoping to recover with a solid effort at The Strip on Sunday.

"No question about that," he added. "We want to cover a mile come race day. Of course, that's always the goal. We definitely like winning races and being number one in the standings."

Schumacher will have two more qualifying sessions on Saturday to see if he can also clinch his sixth career pole in Vegas.

"I love this place," he said. "I think every driver considers this facility as one of the very best that we go to on the tour."
