TONY PEDREGON HOLDS A TOP THREE STANDING IN NHRA NITRO FUNNY CAR CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS
Las Vegas, Nevada (April 15, 2007) -- Tony Pedregon, the 2003 NHRA Nitro Funny Car Champion and his Q Power Funny Car team rolled into The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the 5th stop on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series circuit. The Q Power team brought its own style of Las Vegas gambling to drag strip known for its high drama and fast runs.
Facing Kenny Bernstein in round one eliminations, Pedregon, running out of the left lane, was out of the gate first and ahead most of the race. "We put a good race until 900' when we dropped a cylinder due to a fuel system issue," stated a disappointed, yet optimistic Pedregon. "I have confidence in this car, Dickie (crew chief, Venables), my team and my equipment. We ran a 328 (MPH) yesterday in qualifying, so we have the speed.I kept my foot in it, but I felt a cylinder go and we just got caught at the end.We feel we can win on any given weekend and I have every confidence that this Q Power Funny Car will be running strong at our next event in Atlanta."
High drama hit the Pedregon camp on Saturday as they prepared for their final qualifying attempt.Pedregon and his Q Power team, sitting in the No. 18 qualifying position going into the final qualifying run, took full advantage of the changing weather patterns.Showing Championship caliber form, Venables and the Q Power Funny Car team quickly adapted to the changing weather.
"When we left the trailer, the sun was out and the track was quite warm," stated Venables. "The clouds had moved in as we headed for the starting line, the weather conditions started to change rapidly. The temperature dropped and the track cooled. The track was getting better which meant we had to adjust the ignition timing curve, clutch application and the blower speed. At least seven adjustments were made on the starting grid and our team performed flawlessly."
Pedregon, the quickest Funny Car driver in NHRA history, blistered the right lane with a time of 4.763 at 328.70 MPH taking him from the No. 18 to the No. 3 qualifying position. When the dust settled, Pedregon would head to Final Round eliminations in the No. 5 qualifying position. Whether it's Atlanta or "Hotlanta" this Q Power Nitro Funny Car team will be ready," stated Tony Pedregon with a smile.Pedregon is 3rd in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series World Championship points race- 144 points behind leader Ron Capps.
