Johnson Jr. Suffers Setback at Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr., who earned his last NHRAFunny Car victory at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2001, suffered a setback behind the wheel of his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car Saturday during qualifying at The Strip.

The five-time NHRA winner failed to qualify his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy Monte Carlo for Sunday's final eliminations at the fifth annual Summitracing.com Nationals. Johnson, who entered the event 10th in the Funny Cars points standings, recorded a run of 5.566 seconds at 210.05 mph. On his second qualifying effort, Johnson's flopper overpowered the track and slowed to a pass of 7.813 at 107.70.

After the first two qualifying sessions were canceled due to inclement weather on Friday, Johnson and the Skoal Racing crew had their backs against the wall with only two shots to make the 16-car field. It marks the first time that Johnson has failed to race on Sunday since June 2002.

"Nothing makes this better," Johnson said. "Yeah, there is another race in two weeks, but it can't make up for this one. This is rough. It's not acceptable for us not to qualify. The rain bit us only getting two qualifying runs, but everyone else only had two runs. It's very frustrating."

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Summitracing.com Nationals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 3, and broadcast two hours of final eliminations coverage at 11 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 4.
