Friday in Las Vegas finds a strong Martino sitting third.

With a field of thirty-four Pro Stock competitors vying for one of only sixteen spots in Sunday's field at the SummitRacing.com Nationals, Tom Martino knew it was crucial to have a strong performance during Friday's opening qualifying sessions.

After posting a seventh-best 7.019-second elapsed time on his initial attempt, the Farmingdale, NJ native blasted through the quarter-mile on his second run in 6.964 seconds with a top speed of 197.77 mph. This placed the Jesel Motorsports Grand Am 3rd at the qualifying midpoint.

"This is the type of Friday qualifying effort we've been looking for since Pomona. We had a solid first run, but knew we would need to step up in evening session. Fortunately, we made the right adjustments, and came up with a fairly good run.

"We've known all year that our Jesel Motorsports Grand Am had the potential to be a contender, but we were plagued by a series of problems. This whole team has worked non-stop since Gainesville to make sure everything would go smoothly here, and so far it has.

"For the first time this season, we can go into Saturday concentrating on staying near the top, and working on our tune-up for Sunday, instead of worrying about making the field. It's a good feeling, but we're not going to dwell on it. This was only the first step."
