WILK EASES INTO 10th SPOT FOR RACE DAY

Tim Wilkerson was concentrating on making smoke-free lap during Saturday's final qualifying session, and he did accomplish that at the end of a very warm and sunny day in the desert. His 4.314, however, was not enough to help him move up, and when his Ford alliance partner Bob Tasca did improve with a 4.243 during the same lap, Wilkerson lost a spot in the standings and will race from the 10th spot on Sunday. His opponent in the first round will be fellow Illinois resident Bob Bode.

"I guess it will be our 'Land of Lincoln' matchup there, in the first round, and it will be a tough one the way Bob is running here," Wilkerson said. "The first run today was the hottest one of the year so far, and we overpowered it just like most everyone else did. On the last one, I wasn't trying to be world beater or do anything funny, but I figured we could run a 4.20 to a 4.22 if everything went right. I guess not everything went right, because we slowed way down from there.

"Even with that lap though, it always feels better going into race day having gone down the track on your last lap. There's nothing to like about going into the first round taking a guess at why you messed up the last one, so we'll feel better about that and we'll go up there to do what we always do. I won't be racing Bob Bode in round one, I'll be racing whatever lane he puts us in."
