SINGLE SESSION YIELDS 7th SPOT FOR WILKERSON
Strong winds, rain, and a long delay due to a timing malfunction on the track all added up to limit the Funny Car class to only one qualifying session in Las Vegas, and Tim Wilkerson powered his way to a solid 4.188 to land 7th after the first day.
"That was one of our pretty much classic A-to-B runs there, because I just wanted to get down the track and set a good baseline for ourselves on this first pass," Wilkerson said. "Then, the wind started whipping and the temperature was dropping, and it finally got to the point where we were only going to be able to make the one run, so now I'm even happier that we had it set up the way we did.
"It was probably more like a 4.16 or 4.165, but I kind of messed up staging the car. I rolled it in and didn't quite get the bottom bulb lit, and then when I let go of the brake to roll a little farther, it lit right away and I took too much of that bulb. The farther you roll in, the more e.t. you're taking off the board, so that's why we all stage shallow during qualifying. It's different on Sunday, because you usually just want to get to the finish line first so you'll roll all the way in. Oh well, we'll batten down the hatches here, because it's trying to flip our whole awning over, and we'll get back at it tomorrow."
