MORGAN WINS PONTIAC PRO STOCK SHOWDOWN AT THE STRIP AT LVMS; WILL QUICKEST IN TOP FUEL
LAS VEGAS -- Veteran driver Larry Morgan powered his Dodge Stratus to victory in the inaugural Pontiac Pro Stock Showdown at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend, while rookie driver Hillary Will was the quickest among Top Fuel drivers in the final pre-season test session.
Team utilized the three-day test session in preparation for this weekend's 46th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. The $2 million race is the first of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series for 2006.
Morgan took the win when six-time world champion Warren Johnson fouled at the start in the final round in his GM Performance Parts Pontiac GTO. In earlier rounds, Morgan outran Erica Enders, Mark Pawuk and Richie Stevens to advance to the final.
Will powered her KB Racing dragster to a weekend best performance of 4.482 seconds at 327.19 mph, while her teammate, Dave Grubnic, posted a 4.490 at 326.08 in his StriVectin-SD dragster. Cory McClenathan clocked a 4.528 at 325.37 in his FRAM Boost2 dragster, while Larry Dixon raced to a 4.540 at 315.71 in his Miller Lite dragster.
Jim Head posted the best run among Funny Car drivers with a 4.858 at 282.84 in a Dodge Stratus. Del Worsham, Scott Kalitta and Bob Gilberston also posted runs in the 4.8-second zone.
Morgan was quickest among 23 Pro Stock cars who turned out for the test session. He posted a 4.744 at 203.95 in his Dodge, while fellow Dodge driver Stevens was next with a 4.759 at 203.28. Johnson and three-time defending world champion Greg Anderson were third and fourth overall in their Pontiac GTOs.
Pro Stock Motorcycle riders Matt Guidera (7.179, 182.82) and Chris Rivas (7.215, 182.97) also utilized the test to prepare for their season-opener, the 37th annual NHRA Gatornationals, March 16-19 at Gainesville, Fla.
