LAS VEGAS (April 9, 2006)- Like the roll of the dice or the flip of a card at the tables, sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. SKULL Gear nitro Funny Car driver Mike Ashley came out with a good number at the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, entering eliminations from the number 14 position with a 4.838. Paired against Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations, Ashley's 4.896/326.03 just missed the mark and went down against Worsham's 4.866/317.49.
"We just keep getting tough first-round opponents," said Ashley. "Del is always a tough competitor." Ashley and Worsham have faced off in the first round in three out of the last four events - Phoenix, Houston and here in Vegas.
"If you look at our numbers, we were right there with the rest of the teams, and we had the second-fastest speed of the round. That means we have a lot of power, and we're still working some things out," he said. Ashley, who had been suffering the effects of food poisoning all day Saturday, said he felt much better and was ready to go at race time.
"The food poisoning didn't change anything this weekend. We came out here and did our best on every run and just got beaten. That's all.
"It's always disappointing when you lose, but in the big picture, I'm happy with where we are. The season is 23 races long, and we have 18 to go. It's definitely a marathon and not a sprint, and you have to pace yourself," he said.
"Like I've been saying all along, we're working on a lot of different things to go fast, and it's just going to take a little time. Things are really starting to come together, and I'm confident we'll start seeing round wins when we get to Bristol.
"We're testing here in Vegas tomorrow, and then we take two weeks off before the next race," Ashley said.
