Martino's gamble falls shy in Vegas

Date: Sunday, April 8, 2001
Location: The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, NV

Starting 13th, Tom Martino had his work cut out for him in the first round of the SummitRacing.com Nationals. Facing No. 3 qualifier Mark Pawuk without the benefit of lane choice, the CENTURY 21 Racing Team had made major adjustments to their Pro Stock Grand Am prior to the start of eliminations. As expected, Martino used another quick reaction time to leave the starting line one hundredth of a second ahead of his opponent. However, his chances for an upset win quickly evaporated when his race car swerved out of the groove, forcing Martino to shut off early and end his day.

"We had been fighting a lack of wheel speed throughout the weekend, so we made some changes to try and correct it. Unfortunately, we went a little overboard, and it cost us. The car was out of control two feet off the starting line, and I knew we couldn't catch Mark, so I shut it down. We're going to do some testing to try and get this CENTURY 21 Grand Am fully sorted out. We've made progress, but this weekend showed us we still have some work to do. We have a little time before heading back to Gainesville, and we're going to take advantage of it."
