LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Sunday, April 8) - Brian "Lump" Self, driver of the = Lump Cylinder Heads Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, came to the 2nd = Annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals with an attitude about Las Vegas. = He admits he gets an attitude about tracks where he doesn't run well. = This weekend Lump has had a change of heart about Las Vegas.
Lump entered today's eliminations qualified eighth. He was paired = against Mike Corvo, Jr. in the first round.=20
When the light went green Self took the advantage at the starting line = and then held on to take the win. Self ran a 7.627 / 175.82 mph to = defeat Corvo's quicker 7.621 / 176.53 mph.
In Round 2 Lump squared off against his friend Greg Stanfield. Lump and = Stanfield are close friends off the racetrack, but on the track they are = furious competitors.
Knowing that Stanfield had a performance advantage, Lump knew he would = have to leave on his old buddy to take the round. Lump did take a slight = advantage on the starting line, but could not hold on to it to take the = win. Stanfield ran a 7.546 / 178.95 mph to Lump's 7.641 / 176.44 mph.
"Man, I should have been quicker," said Self. "My light should have been = a whole lot better. I was hoping to beat him on the tree, because right = now Greg is running in a league of his own.
"I am not going to spend a whole lot of time worrying about my light. I = have other things to worry about.
"We are now going back home and work on everything. Motors, chassis: = everything. Bob (Panella), Randy (Daniels) and Greg (Stanfield) they are = running in league of their own. They have something on all of us. We = need to get to work and find some more so we can keep up with them.=20
"Really we had a pretty good race here in Las Vegas. We tried some = things and found some things that the truck liked. We qualified, and did = it in the top half. That is enough to change my attitude about this = track. I think I'm starting to like Las Vegas."
The next stop on the Pro Stock Truck schedule will be the Advance Auto = Parts NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Ga. May 3-6.
