LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Pre-Race) - Brian "Lump" Self, driver of the Lump Cylinder Heads Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, has a bad attitude when it come to Las Vegas. He hopes that a good showing at the 2nd Annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals April 5-8 will help to improve his attitude.
Lump arrives in Las Vegas after what he feels was a poor showing at the last event in Houston, Texas.
"I was very unhappy with my performance in Houston," said Self. "It made me mad that I struggled so much here at our home track.
"We were having problems and could not figure out what was wrong. We were making killer runs, but the truck would not respond. The computer showed that we ran good down low. It was the top end that had us confused. We stayed Monday and tested.
"The good news is that testing was successful and we found our problem. These new hoods have us thrown for a loop. It increases the room under that hood. That makes jetting the carburetors tricky. We tried a lot of different combinations, and finally found what the truck likes. That makes my attitude better about Las Vegas.
Self talked about the challenges of tuning these naturally aspirated trucks for peak performance at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
"I have a bad attitude about Las Vegas, because I didn't qualify well there last year. We had a hard time getting the truck to run there, and I don't like that.
"Las Vegas is an altitude track, that's the first problem. It is also very dry there, that's the second problem. Those two things together make tuning the truck in Las Vegas a BIG challenge.
"The one thing we have going for us is that we have good data from last year. That should give us a place to start. Hopefully we can build on that baseline and get all we can out of the truck.
"I think if we can qualify well and go some rounds on Sunday that will be enough to change my attitude about Vegas, and hey, if I win on Sunday I will be loving Las Vegas."
Qualifying at the 2nd Annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals will take place on Friday April 6 and Saturday April 7. Eliminations get underway at 11:00 AM PST on Sunday April 8.
