BECKMAN QUALIFIES LUCKY(?) 13TH IN VEGAS
LAS VEGAS (April 4, 2009) - Jack Beckman qualified No. 13 following three rounds of Funny Car qualifying for the NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Friday's second session was cancelled due to an earlier delay for rain and replacement of the Christmas Tree and eventually strong winds.
Beckman hopes his 13th starting position, based on his 4.202-second pass at 302.69 mph he set in the final session, will bring him some good luck as he is matched up against Ashley Force Hood in the opening round of eliminations, a repeat of last Sunday's Houston final round, which Force Hood won.
Beckman's other passes in the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge included a tire-smoking 7.505/82.88 on Friday (No. 14) and a 4.222/263.15 earlier today (No. 12).
"It wasn't what we thought it was going to be," he said of his final try. "I love the fact that right before we dropped the body to pull up to the starting line Johnny (West, crew chief) looked at me and gave me a wink.
"So we did have the Valvoline/MTS Dodge set on a stout run. And, I tell you, from 300 feet on it was a stout run. We're disappointed it wasn't quicker. The upside is we have two runs of data that we can lean on for tomorrow.
"If you qualify for this deal you can win this deal. And we have already proven that Sunday is our day. We may not be heroes Friday or Saturday, but we like to stand there with the trophy at the end of the day on Sunday, so we're cool."
