SCHUMACHER CLOSER TO TITLE AFTER QUALIFYING NUMBER ONE

LAS VEGAS, Nev., October 31 - U.S. Army Top Fuel pilot Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher inched closer to the 2008 NHRA POWERade world championship here Friday following the initial day of qualifying for the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals here at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Schumacher, who only needs to get into Sunday's 16-car field to clinch his fifth consecutive crown, recorded a 3.781-second pass at 316.70 mph in the second session and thus grabbed the number one starting spot going into final qualifying on Saturday. "Well, we're certainly nearing the time for a celebration," said Schumacher.

"We'll have to wait until after the last two sessions tomorrow and then we can go for it. We're feeling pretty good right now, though."

The Chicago-area resident is gunning for his eighth pole of the season and the 55th of his career. "We just didn't want to come out here and squeak into the show," he added. "We wanted to get the pole, if possible. That's what we expect of ourselves. And, of course, we're not going to stop there. We're going to try and win this race and the one out in Pomona (Calif.) in two weeks."

Schumacher needs two more wins to break Greg Anderson's single season record of 15 victories. Additionally, if he claims six more round wins, he'll break Anderson's single season record of 76 round victories.

"For sure, we want those marks," he said. "We've had a dream season so far, so why not add to it. I can't tell you how blessed I've been to experience such a year. I look forward to taking those championship photos with my team tomorrow."
