JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES FOURTH IN FASTEST FIELD IN NHRA HISTORY

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 22, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. continued to qualify his Skoal RacingSM Chevy near the top of the Funny Car order as the ! veteran flopper pilot finished in the No. 4 position Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was the quickest Funny Car field in NHRA history.

After powering to the provisional No. 1 qualifying position on Friday at The Strip with a 4.763-second pass, Johnson's Skoal Racing flopper overpowered the hot LVMS quarter mile on Saturday's opening attempt as the six-time NHRA winner slowed to a 9.599-second elapsed time. Crew chiefs Mike Green and Johnny West made the proper adjustments as Johnson blasted his Monte Carlo to a 4.781, 324.28 effort on his final qualifying attempt of the weekend to finish fourth in the 16-car order.

"I'm disappointed to lose the No. 1 spot, but I was pretty sure that it wouldn't hold as late as we ran that final session," Johnson said. "I'm happy with that 4.78. We ran two 4.70s in qualifying and we've got a good race car for Sunday. We had a clutch problem on the third run, but otherwise, we made three good runs."

The 2001 spring Las Vegas winner will meet up against No. 13 qualifier Phil Burkart Jr. in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday at The Strip. Johnson is 2-2 in his career against the New York-based driver.
