JOHNSON JR. GRABS PROVISIONAL NO. 1 POSITION FRIDAY AT LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 21, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. blasted his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the provisiona! l No. 1 qualifying position Friday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the veteran nitro pilot carded a 4.763-second elapsed time to lead the Funny Car order at the fifth annual ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals.

The Iowa native opened qualifying at Bruton Smith's Las Vegas facility by racing to the fifth quickest pass of the first qualifying session when Johnson used a tune-up from crew chiefs Mike Green and Johnny West to stop The Strip at LVMS timers in 4.862 seconds at 318.09 mph.

With a solid baseline on the Las Vegas track, the Skoal Racing team unleashed a 4.763, 325.77 run on Friday's second qualifying session giving Johnson, the 2001 spring Las Vegas winner, his first provisional No. 1 spot of the 2005 season.

"I guess you can call it a dry spell," Johnson said. "I'm not sure if it will hold. The conditions should be pretty similar tomorrow, so people should step up. The performance of our car has been coming around the second half of the season. We've been qualifying well near the top of the pack. It wasn't a big surprise to us, but it was a nice surprise.

"Actually, I never thought it would hold. We were towards the middle of the pack and there were a lot of good cars behind us. It was far from a perfect run, so we'll definitely try and improve tomorrow.

Johnson looks to earn his first No. 1 qualifying award since the 2001 Winternationals at Pomona (Calif.) Raceway. The veteran driver has five career low qualifying awards.
