LAS VEGAS (Oct. 23, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to a second round-finish Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas! Motor Speedway during the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals.

Johnson, who qualified in the No. 4 position, used a pass of 4.957 seconds at 322.11 mph to knock off No. 13 qualifier Phil Burkart Jr. in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations. Burkart's flopper smoked the tires and slowed to a 9.042-second pass. In the second round of eliminations, opponent Del Worsham forced a lane switch prior to the race. The veteran drivers used similar reaction times before the Skoal Racing Monte Carlo spun the tires and slowed to a 6.600-second run, while Worsham carded a 4.964, 314.09 effort to score the trip to the semifinals.

"The race track threw us a curve today," Johnson said. "We were lucky to pedal and get the win in the first round. Unfortunately, that lost us lane choice for the second round. I wanted the right lane and they switched up on us at the last minute. In the second round, the left lane wasn't nearly as good. The tune-up went from too soft first round to too aggressive in the second round and the tires came loose. It was a tough race track today."
