LAS VEGAS -- Tommy Johnson Jr. saved his best qualifying run for last Saturday and it moved him into the No. 8 starting position for Sunday's ACDelco Las  Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Johnson's Special Edition Skoal Racing Funny Car came in with a 4.865-second, 309.84-mph run that puts him against Tim Wilkerson (ninth,4.879 at 310.27) in athe first round.        Ron Capps, at the controls of the Green Skoal Racing Camaro, improved to 4.891 at 313.00 mph and wound up 11th.  He squares off against Scotty Cannon in round one.        "That was a real nice run," Johnson said.  "It picked up the front wheels and went down the track.  We had runs of 4.93, 4.90 and the 4.86 qualifying and I'm excited about racing Sunday and starting in the top half of the field.          "We tried something different in the tune-up in the first run (Saturday) and it didn't work. The tires shook real hard."        Capps' crew also was experimenting.  "We were trying a new fuel system," he reported.  "We know we have to take a couple steps backward to go forward.  We ran the 4.89 in the first session and it was on a good run on the last run but it spun the tires down track and it slowed to a 4.93."

Capps is the defending race champion.
