CAPPS RACES TO NO. 3 IN VEGAS QUALIFYING
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 30, 2010) - Ron Capps raced the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger Funny Car to No. 3 in qualifying for the 10th annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
He recorded his quickest pass of 4.082 seconds at 309.06 mph, which vaulted him from No. 6 to No. 3, in the final session held under the lights after a series of long delays to clean up oil downs and Jeff Diehl's crash in the last round (he escaped injury).
His previous laps were a 4.126/301.74 (No. 6), 5.718/119.61 (No. 8) and a 4.092/305.98 (No. 6)
"Great run," Capps said of his final pass. "Obviously, the first goal is to qualify in the top half and have lane choice. And it was just an unbelievable day, and not all that great for the fans to have to sit through all the oil down cleanups.
"Jeff Diehl's wreck was scary to watch, but he was OK. And then we sat back there waiting for the cleanup as the temperatures dropped. The thought process was we wanted to move up in the standings (he's No. 9), and that was the way we were going to approach it." This race and the season finale in Pomona, Calif., will complete the season.
"I love the fact that (crew chief) John Medlen was going for the No. 1 spot. It's what we wanted to do and the conditions were there to do it. It's almost nice to not be completely satisfied with the 4.08, believe it or not. We were trying for a little more and it's neat that the NAPA team is not content with that, even though that was a great run.
"We have lane choice, it was another good run for John and Ronnie (Thompson, assistant crew chief) to look at, and tomorrow we will see different conditions. It ought to be a lot of fun."
Capps faces Del Worsham in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
