Lucas Welcomes Las Vegas Double Duty
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 17) -- For multi-talented drag racer, Morgan Lucas, this weekend at the fifth annual NHRA ACDelco Nationals on 'The Strip' at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be a racing escapade he has been living all of his 21 years for. What makes Lucas thrive is racing competition and he will receive his limit of sprinting to the finish line in both the Top Fuel 'Big Bud Shootout' on Saturday followed by Sunday's ACDelco Nationals. His mission is to make seven successful winning runs in heated clashes against the best Top Fuel drivers on tour and if successful, he will pocket $200,000. It will be a weekend full of rivalries and high anxiety and that's exactly what the Riverside, Calif. native wants.
The $100,000 'Big Bud Shootout' money is up for grabs and Lucas is entering his first Top Fuel classic, but one mentor Lucas can depend on for giving his engaging advice will be the six-time winner, Joe Amato (1985, 1987-90, 1992).
"Having someone with Joe's experience can be very beneficial and I think winning the 'Big Bud Shootout' and the ACDelco Nationals would actually make the whole year worthwhile," said Lucas, who has one victory and one runner-up finish during his Lucas Oil Drag Racing Top Alcohol career at LVMS. "It would be a great way to cap it off. I can't think of a better place than Las Vegas, but to win them both would be huge. So, I've got to get in the groove and get going."
LVMS was the site of Lucas' first professional final round appearance last year and with this kind of money up for stake, he'll be honing his starting line skills to make sure that he leaves nothing to chance.
"I've been working on my (reaction time) lights lately and it would be nice to pick up my average there," said Lucas. "I think the car can run really good there; we did it last year. I think we're far ahead from where we were a year ago."
Qualifying for the ACDelco Nationals starts on Friday, Oct. 21 with sessions at 1:00 and 4:30 p.m. with Saturday's qualifying and Budweiser Shoot-out eliminations beginning at 1:30 p.m., 3:15 p.m. with the finals at 4:50 p.m. Sunday's eliminations start promptly at 11 a.m., PDT, Sunday, Oct. 23.
