LAS VEGAS, (Oct. 26, 2001) - Dean Skuza took his new Mopar Parts 'Spiderman' Dodge R/T Nitro Funny Car entry to the fifth slot following the first day of qualifying for the ACDelco NHRA Nationals at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Skuza, who smoked the tires on his first pass, came back strong in the second round and posted a 4.855-second elapsed time at 315.64 mph.
"We're real pleased with that," Skuza said. "We know that the car has a lot more in it, but we wanted to make sure that we made the race after smoking the tires in round one. The guys did a great job with the car."
Osborne Leads Pro Stock Contingent Alderman Also In
Mark Osborne, driver of the Hemi-powered Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T, grabbed the 10th-qualifed position to lead the Mopar Pro Stock contingent.
Osborne traveled the suburban Las Vegas quarter mile in 6.992 seconds at 196.90 mph.
"The right lane is not near as good as the left," said Osborne, who qualified in the right lane during his second pass. "It's real bald on the starting line and we got a little sideways in the middle of the track. I think we could have run a little faster if we we're in the left."
Teammate Darrell Alderman also broke the 7.00-second barrier when he cracked off a 6.999-second pass at 197.80 mph to nab the 13th slot.
"We were a little light with the clutch out there," Alderman said. "Hopefully we'll pick it up tomorrow morning. It's hard to believe that a good run like a 6.99 is only good enough for 13th. It shows you how close it is out there."
Dodge Motorsports Neon R/T driver Larry Morgan was disappointed in his initial day of qualifying when he missed the top 16 with a 7.050-second elapsed time at 195.25 mph.
"I can't believe how poorly the track was prepared out there," said a frustrated Morgan, who ran in the right lane in his second lap. "I could barely hold on to the car and nearly hit the wall. I'm real disappointed and hope that it gets resolved for tomorrow."
