HAGAN QUALIFIES NO. 4 IN VEGAS
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 30, 2010) - Funny Car points leader Matt Hagan qualified the DieHard Dodge Charger Funny Car in the No. 5 position for the 10th annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on a cool day that saw unusually lengthy delays.
He posted his quickest pass of 4.090 seconds at 304.53 mph in the Friday evening session, third quickest of the round, earning him a single bonus point for the weekend. In contrast, second-in-points John Force qualified No. 2 and earned five qualifying bonus points. Entering Sunday's eliminations, Force is now 57 points (three rounds) behind Hagan.
Hagan's other attempts produced a 4.155/298.67 (No. 8) earlier on Friday, and a 4.829/163.41 (No. 4) and a tire-smoking 7.352/80.64 on Saturday. The final session was held after 9 p.m. under the lights on a 67-degree track, after a long delay to clean up Jeff Diehl’s crash early in the round. He escaped injury.
"What a marathon weekend," said Hagan, referring also to similar delays on Friday. "We were supposed to run at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and we didn't finish our first session until 3:30 and the second one at 9:30. So much for dinner tonight. It's more like just a snack and to bed.
"Qualifying didn't go the way we wanted it to. These were (crew chief) Tommy DeLago's conditions, but we just didn't accomplish what we wanted to, which was to qualify No. 1 and earn more of those qualifying bonus points.
"Force picked up some valuable points on us. He's evened it up to three rounds now. We just have to do better tomorrow, and get this DieHard Charger running.
"We've been a little bit off here in qualifying. It will be interesting to see how we do tomorrow."
Hagan faces Tony Pedregon in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
