KJ Starts Strong, Sits Second in Vegas on Friday

Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team opened their qualifying effort for the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals in impressive fashion on Friday, making two of the better runs among the 25 Pro Stock cars entered while recording the fastest top speed in each of the two sessions.

KJ's 6.828-second, 202.33 mph pass was the best among the "factory hot rods" for that round, and slotted him in the second position midway through qualifying. Despite his strong showing, Johnson was already working on a way to better his performance on Saturday.

"We made two good runs today, with the second one being better than everyone else, which is all that matters. Hopefully, tomorrow we will have a little cool air and a cool track for the first session, so we can collect that No. 1 qualifier money.

"The motor is pretty happy right now, so we're going to just make a few small changes to see if we can make it even better. Our goal this weekend is to change as little as possible between runs so we can keep our ACDelco Cobalt happy and going down the racetrack.

"We've already started looking at Sunday, so we hope we can get a run on a hot racetrack tomorrow in order to tune for race day. In any case, we're going to take it one run at a time."
