BECKMAN EARNS NO. 9 IN VEGAS QUALIFYING
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 30, 2010) - Jack Beckman qualified the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger Funny Car in No. 9 for the 10th annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
He posted his quickest pass of 4.124 seconds at 306.74 mph right out of the box on Friday, then struggled through the three remaining qualifying rounds, recording a 5.525/131.05 (No. 7), a 5.316/140.88 (No. 8), and finally a tire-shaking 8.729/73.13 under the lights on a 67-degree track following lengthy delays throughout the day.
"It has certainly not shaped up the way we thought it would for us the first two days here," said Beckman, who is third in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs, with just this race and the season finale in Pomona, Calif., left in the season.
"This last pass was such an atypical run at a NHRA national event. The cars that ran fast ran fast because they were shooting for the moon." That included John Force (4.050/311.92), Ashley Force Hood (4.057/309.70) and Ron Capps (4.082/309.06). Beckman's teammate and points leader Matt Hagan was also aiming for No. 1, but smoked the tires (7.352/80.64).
"We tried to go a high 4.0 and it shook the tires. We're never going to see these conditions on race day, but to smoke the tires three out of four runs is very unusual for us.
"The good news is we got good data on our 4.12. We've got Bob Bode in the first round, who we know is probably going to go down the race track. So, we need to be a little quicker than him and I need to do my job on the line. And this is the time of the year where we're going to earn every single point the tough way.
"But if things turn out the way we want them to, this is going to be a perfect script for us."
