Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 21, 2002 - In 1972, Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster, was not a typical eight-year-old boy. Most of Doug's peers aspired to be fire fighters or policemen, but when his schoolteachers inevitably would ask, "What do you want to be when you grow up?", Doug would answer, "I want to be a race car driver." Kalitta had a different kind of American dream.
Also in 1972, the rock n' roll band KISS began a musical odyssey that would revolutionize the art of music entertainment. They redefined showmanship by making their own rules and continually raising the standards of excellence. Their influence, both musically and visually, upon other entertainers is immeasurable. They never surrendered their dreams, no matter how difficult or different they seemed to be.
This weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Kalitta and KISS will join their rebellious forces to "rock n' rail" the rest of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series' Top Fuel class with a special, KISS-themed paint scheme on the Mac Tools dragster during the AC Delco NHRA Nationals, Oct. 24-27.
As KISS celebrates 30 years of music, Kalitta hopes to celebrate again in the winner's circle as he and Team Kalitta go for their third consecutive victory. The Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports team has won the past three of four national events including a win in Reading, Penn., and consecutive wins in Chicago, Ill., and Dallas, Tex.
"The Mac Tools dragster is in a class by itself right now," Kalitta said. "The level of confidence on our team is as high as I can ever remember it being. Winning is fun, and we are having a lot of fun."
"Las Vegas is such an awesome city, and The Strip (at Las Vegas Motor Speedway) is a superb facility with a great racing surface. Plus, we get to have KISS riding along with us, which will make the whole event a blast for the fans and for us."
Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, members of KISS, will be in attendance during the weekend to experience the racing action and to serve as Grand Marshals for the event.
Kalitta Motorsports' race shop is just outside Detroit in Ypsilanti, Mich. Kalitta would like to make a special request if the Mac Tools dragster rolls into the winner's circle in Las Vegas.
"One of my favorite songs by KISS is "Detroit Rock City". It would be really cool to have that song playing if we win with Gene and Paul there. Our celebration may not be as thrilling as a KISS concert, but we would sure like to try."
