HERBERT TAKES A COUPLE OF ROUND WINS IN LAS VEGAS
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 23, 2005) -- Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel team earned another couple of round wins Sunday at the ACDelco NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Herbert drove to the No. 6 spot in qualifying Saturday before he earned another semifinal round appearance on Sunday.
"All in all, this was a better outing for us than the last time we were in Las Vegas," Herbert said about the second round loss in April. "We went to the semifinals for the sixth time this season and that is a major improvement over the three semifinals we were in last year. We wanted to walk out of the desert with a Wally trophy, but I guess that will have to wait for the '06 season."
Herbert beat Jack Beckman in the first round of racing action. Herbert's Snap-on Tools dragster smoked the tires early, turning in a 6.104-second pass at 276.52 mph, still beating Beckman's 8.013 at 114.30. It was the first time the two racers met up in final eliminations.
In Round Two, Herbert drove past Doug Foley with a 4.653 at 314.75 over Foley's 4.745 at 298.87. It was the second time this season Herbert has topped Foley in final eliminations.
Herbert turned in a 5.251 run at 293.54 in a battle of tire-smoking dragsters in the semifinals, losing to the Alan Johnson-tuned entry that went 4.915 at 291.51.
"We beat ourselves today and that's what is really disappointing for this team," Herbert said. "We just had problems finding the right tuneup for this track but we'll get to Pomona and bounce back. We weren't the only team struggling this weekend, but we have a great group of guys working on this Snap-on dragster, so I'm confident we'll get to Pomona and be a threat to win the last race of the season.
"Even when we have a few hurdles to clear, we learn something that will help us get better. We want to win rounds to close out this season, but we also have a lot of great things to look forward to next year, and anything we can learn about the car now will be an advantage for us next season."
Herbert drove the Snap-on Tools dragster to a 4.528 pass at 317.72 in qualifying and started in the top half of the 16-car field for the 12th time this season.
All the action can be seen on ESPN2 tonight at 8 p.m. (ET).
The next and final event of the 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season is the Automobile Club of Southern California Finals at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif., Nov. 3-6.
