Baca has his best qualifying outing of year at Vegas

LAS VEGAS (October 30, 2004) -- David Baca, who drives the D. Baca & Family Top Fuel Dragster, saved the best for the final qualifying session and blazed The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway quarter-mile in 4.526 seconds, good for the No. 4 spot on the qualifying ladder at the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals. This is the highest that the Brentwood, Calif., driver has qualified this season.

Out of the four qualifying sessions, Baca put together three solid runs -- 4.651, 4.631 and 4.526 seconds.

"We are getting a little more consistent," said Baca. "That's what it takes to be a winner in this league. We have all the equipment. We have all the knowledge. We got it all together today.

"Our goal tomorrow is to go a mile, a quarter-mile at a time. I want to get some round wins under our belt and if Lady Luck shines upon us go to the winner's circle."

First up for Baca in tomorrow's eliminations is Andrew Cowin, who qualified in the 13th spot with an elapsed time of 4.640 seconds. Eliminations get underway for all classes beginning at 11 a.m., local Las Vegas time.

Although he has run a limited schedule this year, entering the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, Baca is No. 14 in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings with 552 points.

ESPN2 will air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 7 until 10 p.m. on Sunday (October 31). Television times are Eastern Time (ET) and subject to change at anytime. Check local listings.
