Baca uses last session pass to qualify at Vegas

LAS VEGAS (October 25, 2003) -- David Baca, driver of the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports/American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/Skill Clean Top Fuel dragster, was out of the field entering the final qualifying for the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals. He recorded a 4.714 second pass down The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway quarter-mile to enter the field in the 13th spot at the time.

"We've been behind all weekend," said Baca, from the top end of the track immediately following the run. "I don't know if being in the paper on Friday was a jinx, but I really appreciate the write up. Let's hope it holds. The car was trucking. It was going to the top of the heap. Golly gee, I hope it holds. I need to stay in."

It did hold and Baca did stay in. The Brentwood, Calif. driver finished in the No. 16 position and will face No. 1 qualifier Tony Schumacher in the opening round tomorrow. The pair have not met previously in eliminations.

"Now we'll have time to look at the computer tapes and prepare for tomorrow. We'll be ready and look forward to mixing it up with Schumacher," said Baca, following the conclusion of qualifying.

Final eliminations for all classes get underway at 11 a.m. (CDT) on Sunday.
