BROWN DRIVES MATCO TOOLS RAIL TO NO. 2 SPOT AT LAS VEGAS
LAS VEGAS (Nov. 1, 2008) -- Antron Brown powered his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to the No. 2 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The first-year Top Fuel standout used a qualifying-best elapsed time of 3.812-seconds to finish second in the 16-car order.
Brown qualified for his 168th consecutive NHRA race by carding a run of 3.812 seconds at 315.49 mph on Friday evening under the lights at The Strip at LVMS. The two-time Top Fuel winner cruised the Matco Tools dragster to the quickest pass of Saturday's first qualifying session. He used a tune-up from champion crew chief Lee Beard to clock a performance of 3.834 at 313.07. On his final attempt of qualifying, Brown blasted the Matco-backed rail to a pass of 3.853 at 301.27 to finish second in the order. It is the second time that Brown has qualified in the No. 2 position this season (Joliet, Ill.). Brown raced the Matco Tools car to a runner-up finish at the spring Las Vegas race in April (to Cory McClenathan).
"Lee (Beard) and my Matco (Tools) guys were on it this weekend," Brown said. "We just need to keep it going tomorrow. We had a few oil downs and need to fix that for race day, but the important thing is that we qualified well. It's good to be near the top of the order. Now, we want to go out and go some rounds on race day. The goal is to finish second and we have two races left to get that No. 2 position back."
Brown will face off against No. 15 qualifier Troy Buff in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday at the Las Vegas track. Brown is 1-0 against Buff this season.
