Team Mopar Driver Johnson Grabs Third Consecutive No. 1 of Season at Vegas

Las Vegas (Oct. 30, 2010) -- Team Mopar NHRA Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson continued his recent run of domination in qualifying, scoring his third consecutive No. 1 spot and seventh of year today in his Mopar Dodge Avenger at the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals. Pro Stock veteran V. Gaines also qualified No. 2, giving Mopar HEMI-powered Dodge Avengers the top two spots in qualifying for the second straight NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Johnson seized the No. 1 spot in yesterday's second qualifying session with a 6.660-second pass at 207.46 mph pass. He bettered that mark and retained his position on top in the first stanza today with a 6.651/207.82 pass, then did it again in his final qualifying run with a best elapsed time of 6.646 seconds at 207.75 mph.

"Three No. 1s in a row, that's quite an accomplishment and a great effort by the J&J Racing team," said Johnson, who scored his 14th career pole today. "All season we've been lights out in qualifying, and that's so important to start near the top and have lane choice. We'll try to use it well tomorrow and get that second win of the year."

The final qualifying session was scheduled for the afternoon today but was delayed for hours due to a number of oil downs during qualifying in the nitro classes. The cooler track temperatures were fine by Johnson.

"When the sun goes down the track gets awesome here," said Johnson. "We knew we had to get after it to keep it (the pole), and that's what we did. We stepped it up. It's the second race in a row where two Dodges are 1-2.

"We're not going to change a lot for tomorrow on race day running behind the fuel cars instead of in front of them. We've got to make a few adjustments, but we're going to keep that 'kill' button pushed. We're going to scratch and claw and keep on gettin' it."

Gaines powered his Mopar to No. 2 with a 6.651/206.89 pass. Johnson will face Johnny Gray in the opening round of eliminations tomorrow, with Gaines going head-to-head with Bob Yonke.
