Greg Anderson's Pontiac GTO Leads First Day Qualifiers at SummitRacing.com Nationals
Three-Time Pro Stock Champ Looking For Fifth Career Pole at LVMS
LAS VEGAS, April 7, 2006 - The first day of time trials for the SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was completed today, and with two qualifying rounds in the record book, Greg Anderson has his Pontiac GTO parked in the No. 1 starting position in the Pro Stock category. During the evening round of time trials, the Summit Racing Pontiac driver stopped the timers with a 6.787 e.t. at 202.82 mph.
"We've definitely done a good job of qualifying all year, there's no question about it" said Anderson, whose been No. 1 at three of the first four events. "Our weak point has been on raceday. It's great to qualify No. 1, and obviously the team's done a great job there taking the King Demon cash and getting the extra eight points that goes along with it, but somehow we've missed it on raceday and that's the important day. We spent all day last Monday at Houston testing trying to figure out what mistakes we were making and hopefully we've rectified a few things. I guess we'll find out Sunday. We need a good get-well weekend and I can't think of better place to do it than Las Vegas Motor Speedway."
Anderson has started raceday from the pole at this event twice (2003-04), and for the fall race twice (2003, 2005). At last year's April contest, the 45-year-old North Carolina resident qualified fifth and earned a runner-up finish.
"We have a lot of great memories and have had a lot of great success here," said Anderson. "We have a long way to go but we're pretty pleased with the move we made from the first to the second round. We picked up four hundredths in the Summit Racing Pontiac GTO, we made a lot better run and if we can continue that progress tomorrow and through Sunday, we'll be happy campers."
Qualifying coverage of the Summit Racing.com NHRA Nationals will be telecast on ESPN2 on Saturday, April 8, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. A three-hour broadcast of final eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday, April 9, starting at 7 p.m. Eastern.
