Epler's run in Las Vegas comes to an abrupt end

Date: Sunday, April 8, 2001
Location: The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, NV

After qualifying 14th, Jim Epler knew it would take his best run of the weekend in order to advance to the second round of the SummitRacing.com Nationals. The Etchells Racing team had worked late into Saturday night preparing their Motley Crue/Matco Tools/Orleans Hotel & Casino Camaro Z28 as they looked to pull off the upset of No.3 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr.

Leaving the starting line as if bolted together, the two "fuel coupes" rocketed down the Las Vegas quarter-mile. However, Jim Epler's hopes of repeating as Funny Car champion were quickly dashed when his car suddenly slowed due to a mechanical failure allowing his opponent to drive away for the win.

"It seemed like we had made some progress on the tune-up because the Motley Crue/Matco Camaro seemed to be on a good run, when unfortunately another input shaft broke. I'm not sure if we would have been able to beat T.J., but we still would have liked to complete the pass and see how the car ran.

"Since we didn't, we're going to stay here and test on Monday until we get it right. We have to learn what's going on with these clutch discs, and try and get our combination figured out. We have to race TJ again in the first round two weeks from now in Gainesville, so I figure we owe him one."
