Herbert starts seventh at Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, April 5, 2003 - Doug Herbert, Ron Douglas and Jim Brissette were left scratching their heads Saturday evening as they huddled to figure out what's causing the tune-up problems in Herbert's Snap-on Top Fuel dragster.

"We have a gremlin in there somewhere and it's hard to figure out because there are other things going on with the car," said Herbert after qualifying seventh for Sunday's SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. "We could go to the old shotgun approach and change everything and hope we find it, but we'd prefer to know what's going on."

Herbert's best time came Friday night, 4.622 seconds at 284.62 mph, on a run where the engine expired at about 800 feet. He did run 4.628 in his final qualifying run Saturday. He races David Grubnic in opening round eliminations.

"We need to improve if we want to win more rounds," Herbert added. "If we get past Grubnic, then it's likely we'll run Larry Dixon in the next round."

Dixon is the NHRA POWERade Series point leader while Herbert in eighth. "We can't afford to get too far behind Dixon in points," Herbert said.

Douglas, the crew chief, and Brissette, the tuning advisor, were looking into the fuel system in the hopes of ending the trouble.
