Herbert Goes to Semis, Jumps to Ninth in Points
LAS VEGAS, April 4, 2004 - It seemed apropos that Doug Herbert's racing luck would change in this Nevada city. Herbert not only won his first elimination rounds of the 2004 POWERade season in the Summitracing.com Nationals Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he also made his first appearance in the top 10.
After being frustrated because his Snap-on Top Fuel team missed two rounds of qualifying when a steady rain washed out Friday's competition, Herbert came back with a 4.681-second run at 313.66 mph when the sun finally came out Saturday afternoon. That run, as it turned out, put him 12th overall and against Darrell Russell in the opening round . . . Herbert was able to drive away from Russell when his car lost traction. Herbert's time was 4.601 seconds to a losing 5.052. In the second round, Herbert had a solo run when rival Cory McClenathan's car experienced problems in the pit area and couldn't make the starting call . . . Eventual race winner Tony Schumacher ended the Snap-on team's day with a 4.666 run to Herbert's tire-spinning 5.512.
"This race was a turning point for us. We tried to run a low 4.5-second time and spun the tires in the second round. We tried to soften the combination and it didn't work because track conditions were changing, too. I was frustrated Saturday night, but I'm happy with our results. I think we learned a lot and we're ready to start making some noise."
