Herbert reaches quarterfinals at Las Vegas; team finds gremlin that plagued it.

LAS VEGAS, April 6, 2003 - The jackpot at the end of the SummitRacing.com Nationals Sunday did not go to Doug Herbert, but Herbert did go away with a very nice parting gift.

Herbert, crew chief Ron Douglas and tuning consultant Jim Brissette decided to change the fuel pump on his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster Saturday night and they saw an immediate change for the better.

"We got behind the eight-ball chasing the gremlin that showed up in the car Friday," Herbert said. "It was disappointing because we'd run two 4.55s (seconds) at Gainesville (Fla.) and thought we could do the same here."

Herbert didn't, but he did advance to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual race winner Larry Dixon. He defeated David Grubnic in the first round despite the fact he had to pedal the throttle when the tires began spinning.

"We are making horsepower now but, by putting on the new fuel pump, we created other problems," Herbert added. "We will get things ready to go for Houston."

Herbert, who remained eighth in NHRA POWERade Series points with 193, returns to action Friday through Sunday at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas.

Qualified: No. 7, 4.622 seconds at 284.62 mph

First round: Herbert, 4.814 at 284.93 def. David Grubnic, 5.756 at 160.56; Quarterfinals: Larry Dixon, 4.570 at 325.00 def. Herbert, 6.099 at 159.76
