LAS VEGAS (April 4, 2009) - Cory McClenathan and the rest of the Top Fuel field at the NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway were denied the luxury of running four rounds of qualifying. Instead, they were relegated to just two today under comfortable conditions after Friday's rain-delayed runs were cancelled because of strong winds.

McClenathan and the FRAM Tough Guard Top Fuel team took full advantage of each opportunity to qualify high and ended up seventh by virtue of the 3.918-second run at 306.74 mph he set in his final try, which followed a 4.353/238.47 lap earlier in the day.

"I think having only two qualifying runs makes one kind of wonder what's going on here," said McClenathan, last year's event champion. "Obviously, in Las Vegas we don't expect that. We've had some strange weather here, and when it gets that windy, you just have to do what you can do.

"These FRAM Tough Guard guys did the right thing. They made good calls. Just before we started the car (for the final pass), Todd (Okuhara, crew chief) looked in at me and said, 'We're going to lean on it and try to run good numbers.'

"I'm really proud of them. Once again, these FRAM Tough Guard guys have done a great job. You'd never have thought they were Funny Car tuners before they came over here, by any means."

McClenathan faces Troy Buff in the first round of Sunday's eliminations.
