CAPPS, BRUT TEAM ADJUSTING TO NEW GOODYEAR TIRE
LAS VEGAS (April 6, 2004) -- Drag racing pilot Ron Capps begins the NHRA Summitracing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway leading the standings in the Nitro Funny Car class and he says one reason for his team's early-season success is a decision made during the off season.
Goodyear is the exclusive tire supplier for the NHRA's Nitro Top Fuel and Funny Car classes. The development process never stops at Goodyear and the tiremaker spent much of calendar 2005 developing a new rear drive tire for the Nitro classes. That new tire, the D2420, is now the only rear tire allowed in the two classes.
"The D2420 is a slightly different tire from the one we used last year," said Carolyn Ashbee, Goodyear's sales and marketing manager for drag racing. "We continue to learn and evaluate the new nitro tire at each event and have been pleased with the competitive racing we have seen since Gainesville. Las Vegas is always a fast, record-setting track and it should give us more valuable information to build on. "
At the first two races of the season, the NHRA allowed teams to choose between the D2420 and the tire Goodyear supplied in 2005. The two-race grace period allowed teams extra time to adjust to the new tire, but Capps said in a team press release that the decision by his team to devote much of the winter testing period to learning the nuances of the D2420 has been a key to the fast start by the Brut-sponsored Dodge.
"The credit goes to (crew chief Ed) Ace (McCulloch) and the Brut Dodge guys because the plan was to get used to this tire, knowing full well we were going to have to run it," Capps said. "We spent a lot of effort and a lot of hard work in the off-season and it showed in Gainesville, and of course Houston."
Capps won in Houston, beating Bob Gilbertson in the final round. It was his
second consecutive win.
"This is a great tire," said Capps. "Some guys were throwing out some great shots (in testing) when the weather was cool, but I knew that when it came to race day and it got a little warm out in the middle of the day, it would be a challenge, and that's what we worked on in testing."
Don't bet against Capps to make it three straight wins. He has two career wins at The Strip.
