ANTRON BROWN EARNS SECOND NO. 1 QUALIFYING AWARD OF 2010 SEASON SATURDAY IN LAS VEGAS
LAS VEGAS (April 17, 2010)- Antron Brown raced to his second No. 1 qualifying position of the season Saturday afternoon at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 24-time NHRA winner earned his 23rd career pole on the heels of Friday's 3.881-second elapsed time during the 11th annual Summitracing.com Nationals.
Brown earned the provisional pole for the second straight week after powering his Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to a category-best lap of 3.881 seconds at 316.60 mph on Friday's second qualifying attempt. On Saturday's first try at the hot LVMS track, Brown raced to the second quickest pass of the session after powering the bright blue Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to a lap of 3.927 at 314.02. Only Larry Dixon's Alan Johnson-owned dragster was quicker. Brown's Matco-backed rail lost traction on its final qualifying attempt and slowed to a run of 4.449 at 175.16, but the former college track star remained at the top of the Top Fuel order. The Matco Tools team earned five bonus points in qualifying as Brown carded his second top qualifier of the season.
"We ran good again today," Brown said. "It's tricky out there and our first lap was really strong in the heat. We were second quick of that first session behind (Larry) Dixon and on the second pass we were trying the new (Goodyear) tire and just lost traction down track. Our Matco team is just so strong and confident right now and we're going to do our best to try to get to another final round and bring it home for all our Matco distributors here at Las Vegas this weekend."
Brown will face off against No. 16 qualifier Rob Passey in the opening round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday at The Strip at LVMS. Brown is 1-0 in his career against Passey and has a record of 9-5 this season in five races with three final-round appearances.
