BROWN QUALIFIES MATCO TOOLS DRAGSTER SECOND AT LAS VEGAS
LAS VEGAS (April 4, 2009) - One week after earning his 16th career No. 1 qualifying award, Antron Brown powered his Mike Ashley-owned Matco Tools dragster to the No. 2 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
On his first qualifying lap of the weekend, Brown and the Matco Tools car posted strong early numbers until the Matco car kicked the tires loose and slowed to a pass of 4.071 seconds at 268.49 mph. That positioned Brown third in the 16-car order. The Matco car clocked the quickest 330-foot elapsed time of the round. On his second and final qualifying attempt, Brown used a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to speed the Matco-backed rail to a performance of 3.878 at 312.86 to finish in the No. 2 qualifying position. It is the 24th time that Brown has qualified second. Brown now has an average qualifying posititon of 2.8 in five races this season. There were 18 Top Fuel dragsters attempting to make the field for the 10th annual Summitracing.com Nationals and rookie Shawn Langdon earned his first career pole in the Lucas Oil dragster at 3.874-seconds.
"We're very happy with the way our Matco dragster is running," Brown said. "That first session was tricky, but we had the best 330 (foot time) and were third quick. We went out on that last run and Brian (Corradi) and Mark (Oswald) tuned her up and we put an awesome run on the board at 3.87. We're very happy to finish second and we're excited to go some rounds on Sunday for all the folks from Matco, Lend American and DirecTV supporting us this weekend."
Brown will face off against No. 15 qualifier Mike Strasburg in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday at The Strip at LVMS. Brown is 1-0 against Strasburg this season (Pomona 1). Last April, Brown raced the Matco Tools draster to a runner-up finish to 30-time Top Fuel winner Cory McClenathan at the spring Las Vegas race.
