COMMERCE, GA (May 6) - Entering this weekend's Advance Auto Parts Nationals just 24 points out of the lead in the top fuel points race, Larry Dixon will look for his third consecutive win of the 2000 NHRA Winston Drag Racing season when he begins Sunday's elimination round as the No. 9 seed with his best qualifying effort of 4.672 seconds at 316.08 mph.

Dixon began the day as the No. 8 seed (4.68 at 316.08 mph) following the first two qualifying sessions of the weekend. Saturday's first pass saw Dixon pick up his speed with a time of 4.672 seconds at 309.98 mph, however he dipped to the No. 9 spot as Gary Scelzi improved his positioning with a pass of 4.664 seconds. The Miller Lite Dragster was too aggressive for the track on the final qualifying run and posted a time of 10.26 seconds 85.86 mph. Cory McClenathan won his first pole of the season with a track record lap of 4.577 seconds at 312.35 mph.

Dixon will face No. 9 seed Bob Vandergriff in the first round of eliminations on Sunday, which are scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM EST. It will be the 17th meeting between the two drivers as Dixon holds the advantage with 11 wins and five losses. The last time the two drivers met was during the semifinals in Phoenix, with Vandergriff advancing to the finals en route to a runner-up finish.
