GAINESVILLE, FLA (Mar. 18) - Larry Dixon kept his string of top eight qualifying efforts intact Saturday as he drove the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster to the No. 6 position with a pass of 4.659 seconds at 313.88 mph and will face No. 11 seed Rhonda Hartman-Smith in the first round of eliminations Sunday at the Mac Tools Gatornationals.
The first pass for Dixon at Gainesville Raceway saw on Saturday him post the second quickest lap of the session with a time of 4.67 seconds, bettered only by Tony Schumacher's 4.66 effort. At the end of the first session, Dixon remained in the No. 5 spot.
Dixon sewed up his third straight qualifying effort in the top-half of the ladder for the season, having qualified No. 3 in the first two races of the season in both Pomona and Phoenix.
"In qualifying we wanted to try and run a low 60 and Dick was trying different things to try and make that happen, and obviously we didn't get it done, but we did get down the racetrack three of the four runs, so from that standpoint things are looking real good," said Dixon. "Mid 60s can win you a race tomorrow. We just wanted to be a little bit closer to the top of the ladder. I still think we have a real strong car. We are only four hundredths off of low E.T. We have a good racecar."
Dixon also commented on the Miller Lite Crew's ability to refrain from damaging any parts as they were earlier in the season. "At the first two races of the season we were having bearing trouble. Everybody on the team put their heads together during the time off in between Phoenix and Gainesville and we have solved that. We have made four runs, didn't hurt any main bearings and we have run the same engine the car for the whole weekend."
Dixon takes a career mark of one win and one loss (1W-1L) in two total meetings against Rhonda Hartman Smith when he faces her in Sunday's first round. For the season, Dixon has four wins and two losses, resulting in two semifinal finishes for the year.
