NHRA's Kalitta Motorsports makes change to Nitro Funny Car program; Connie Kalitta to take over tuning duties

YPSILANTI, Mich., (June 20, 2006) -- Scott Kalitta, driver of the Kalitta Air Funny Car in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, and Kalitta Motorsports, based in Ypsilanti, Mich., announced today that team owner and drag racing legend Connie Kalitta will assume the responsibilities of crew chief on their 7,000 horsepower, nitromethane-fueled race car effective immediately.

Also effective immediately, Johnny West has been released from the Kalitta Air Funny Car team.

Scott, a 43-year old resident of Palmetto, Fla., and 25-year drag racing veteran, made the switch from Top Fuel to Funny Car this season. Scott has one NHRA national event win in his career in nitro Funny Car and that was at the Houston event in 1989 while driving with a broken left foot. In Top Fuel, Scott scored two world championships (1994-1995) and 17 NHRA national event wins.
