JOLIET, Ill. (Pre-race) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the PiranaZ Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, arrives today in Chicago for the running of the 4th Annual Lucas Oil Products NHRA Nationals. Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. comes to the Route 66 Raceway with a plan in mind.
"Our plan is to make good a run right out of the box," said Whisnant. "We have to do that because it looks like we are going to battle the weather this weekend so it is going to be important to make every run count. We need to make a good run right out of the gate, because we might not get another chance.
"Our plan for the Chicago race is to make good consistent runs like we did in Topeka last weekend. Up until last weekend, we haven't been able to do that. All year long, we would make a good run and then something stupid would happen that would cause us to get behind.
"Topeka was the first chance we had to make a good opening lap and then build on what we had. We made four good runs in a row at Topeka; we have not done that all year. This weekend we will keep working on our consistency. Maybe if we are consistent, that will keep the bad luck away.
"No doubt about it we have had some bad luck this year. We have had parts breakage. Breakage of things that never break. For instance the shift lights, those things never break and we had two malfunction this year. We have that kind of bad luck.
"We have another kind of bad luck on raceday. It seems like who ever I line up against me has their career best run. I think people are starting to look forward to having me in the first round. It is frustrating, but I know that eventually my luck is going to change.
"Really, I have a good attitude coming into Chicago. Right now, I am just letting everything roll off my back. We are going to get to Chicago and work hard, make our runs and hopefully things will turn in our favor this weekend."
Qualifying at the 4th Annual Lucas Oil Products NHRA Nationals begins on Friday June 1, and continues on Saturday June 2. Eliminations will take place on Sunday June 3 at 11:00 AM EST.
