Schumacher third after rain-shortened program
JOLIET, Ill., J une 4, 2010 - Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher today drove the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster into the third position for the 13th Annual United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals during the lone qualifying round in the weather-shortened session here at Route 66 Raceway.
Intermittent rain and thunder storms delayed the start of the first Top Fuel round - and canceled a scheduled second one - until almost 11 p.m., some seven hours late.
"When you only have one run on Friday, you've got to get down the track and into the field," said the reigning and seven-time NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel champion. "We did that and then some."
The Chicago-area native completed the 1,000-foot fun in 3.841 seconds at 317.49 miles per hour, less than .03 seconds off Larry Dixon's track-record, provisional-pole elapsed time of 3.814 seconds.
"Cory (Don Schumacher Racing teammate McClenathan who qualified second with a 3.827-second, 320.81-mph run) and I rewarded the fans who stayed for the whole day a great side-by-side drag race," he said. "Ending this late (11:25 p.m.) is tough on my team, because they still have a lot of work to do before they can leave the track and then they have to get back here in the morning.
"But, like our Army Strong soldiers who often work under truly awful conditions, their dedication, professionalism and teamwork means they shrug off the fatigue and get back to the business at hand with solid purpose and conviction."
Antron Brown, who drives the Matco Tools/U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, did not register an official time because his 6.847-second, 91.56-mph run was not enough to get him into the top 12 qualifiers. Brown will, weather permitting, have two qualifying rounds Saturday to move into the 16-car field for Sunday's race, the 10th of the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
