NHRA's Scott Kalitta ready to let actions speak in Joliet
Joliet, Ill., June 8, 2005 - This weekend, June 9-12, the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series heads to Joliet, Ill., just south of Chicago, for the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. Scott Kalitta, driver of the 7,000 + horsepower Mac Tools/Jesse James Top Fuel dragster is hoping for eight laps down the quarter-mile dragstrip of one of NHRA's finest tracks.
"I want to get down the track four times in qualifying and four times in eliminations," Scott said. "Our car started doing the right things in Topeka (Kans., previous event), so I'm ready to start going rounds and get back in the championship hunt.
"We need a win. I need it, and my team needs it. We know how good it feels to win and we want that feeling back. Talk is cheap. I want our race car to start doing what it's capable of and prove to everyone that we're able to win every single event.
"The Joliet track is great. It's one of our best. I'm eager to get out there on it and race."
In the previous eight events, Scott has won only four rounds of eliminations.
Two-time Top Fuel World Champion (1994-1995) Scott, 43, is a 24-year drag racing veteran. He has 17 career NHRA event wins (16 Top Fuel, 1 Funny Car), including one in 2005 - the season-opener in Pomona, Calif. He is currently in eighth place in Top Fuel championship points.
Kalitta Motorsports, which includes Scott's teammates Doug Kalitta and "Aussie Dave" Grubnic, has made five straight final-round appearances. In the first nine NHRA national events of 2005, Team Kalitta race cars have made seven final-round appearances with five wins (Doug - 3, Scott - 1, Grubnic - 1).
The CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals begins Friday, June 10, for the Top Fuel class with two qualifying sessions. Two more qualifying sessions follow on Saturday. The top sixteen qualified cars will race Sunday in final eliminations.
The CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals is the tenth of 23 national events in the 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
