QUALIFYING COMPLETE AT ROUTE 66 RACEWAY
JOLIOT, Ill. -- The final qualifying is complete at the Indicom Electric NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway. Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Bill Reichert and Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Daniel Wilkerson will start Sunday's eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers.
Rising to the occasion for the second day in a row was defending National Champion Bill Reichert of Owosso, Mich., who outran the field with a pass of 5.296 seconds at 275.67 mph to take the top qualifying position. Next in line was Ken Perry of Gormley, Ont., running a pass of 5.349 seconds at 266.21 mph and will start Sunday's eliminations in the No. 2 spot.
Wilkerson of Springfield, Ill., outran Friday's top qualifier Jay Payne of Claremont, Calif., with a pass of 5.616 seconds at 258.62 mph in Alcohol Funny Car. Payne dropped a position with his time of 5.623 seconds at 259.36 mph.
In Comp Eliminator, Robert Bailey of Wabash, Ind., jumped to the top position over Brian Browell of Lafayette, Ind. Bailey ran a pass of 6.629 seconds to Browell's pass of 7.232 seconds clinching the No. 1 spot.
John Coughlin of Delaware, Ohio was bumped to the No. 2 position by Carmel, Ill., racer Kevin Murphy in Super Stock. Murphy took his '88 Cutlas for a pass of 10.825 seconds to qualify ahead of Coughlin.
Stock Eliminator driver Bert Morgan of Charleston, Ill., driving his '76 Buick Wagon stayed strong qualifying on top for the second day in a row. Morgan kept his spot over No. 2 qualifier Tony Goodman of Zeeland, Mich., who drove a '77 Trans Am.
In the Dart Top Sportsman category Benton, Ill., racer Rick Corn qualified at the top over No. 2 qualifier Greg Lair of Canyon, Tex. Corn ran a time of 6.665 seconds at 200.32 mph while Lair ran a pass of 6.732 seconds at 206.73 mph. Tom Elliott of Brooks, Ky., took the top qualifying spot in the Spitzer Top Dragster division with a time of 6.444 seconds at 210.90 mph. Brooks held off Twinsburg, Ohio, resident David Jamison who ran a time of 6.682 seconds at 202.33 mph. Also qualifying at the top of the field was Pro Stock Snowmobile racer Edwin Wirbel of Midland, Mich., with a pass of 8.418 seconds at 150.40 mph.
