Capps 16th Afer Friday Qualifying at Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. (May 21, 2004) - Ron Capps drove his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 16 qualifying position Friday after clocking a performance of 4.986 seconds at 308.28 mph at Route 66 Raceway.

Capps powered his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to the 4.986 at 308.28 run on his opening qualifying effort of the weekend. On his second qualifying attempt, the 14-time NHRA winner's Chevy Funny Car suffered an engine malfunction and Capps coasted to a pass of 6.645 at 133.72.

"The car left great," Capps said. "The early numbers on the run were really good. It was close to the 4.799 we ran at Las Vegas back in April, and then it pulled the tires loose just out of the blue. Our testing in Atlanta went really well last Monday, and I'm really pleased with how the car is responding early in the run."

Capps aims to move up the Funny Car ladder and capture his first No. 1 qualifying position of the season when nitro qualifying resumes at 1 and 4 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.
